Photography 101

I didn’t go out looking for photography.  I actually stumbled into it in the most innocent of ways.  I have always been artistic and dabbled in painting and drawing.  My parents picked up photography as a hobby while I was in college.  My cousin is a professional photographer but for some reason it never really sparked my interest.  Until one day…..

I had just reached a point in my life, that I realized I HAD to stay home with our kids.  That running around in circles, doing the rat race thing was killing my relationship with our kids, and in the midst of doing all the things I thought I needed to do to give them the best, I had lost the real treasure of them.  I needed to stop everything and reconnect with who I was and more importantly connect more deeply with who our little treasures are. I needed to trust God for all the financial aspects that I had taken control of over the years. I needed to rest.

That was when it all started.  I stopped striving and moving around.  I started to be still and listen more.  As we began our homeschool journey a whole new passion of photography opened up for me.  I remembered the first time someone said they like my “pictures”.  I literally looked over my shoulder.  “Me?” I said. Within a very small period of time, the same thing came up over and over, so I was willing to trust God and just push into it a little. What was waiting for me inside all of those little comments that those I love in my life were picking up on?  Things I couldn’t see.  From then I steadily kept chipping away at all things photog. I taught a 6 week music class for children  that provided just enough money for me to purchase my first starter SLR. I started shooting portraits for friends and family and before you knew it, I had a business growing along, where I get to play with my camera on my terms, when I want to.  I doesn’t run me, it doesn’t own me, and most importantly any income that comes in has no barring on our family budget.  The income is used to give, be generous and from time to time upgrade equipment.

I hope to add a few articles linked here, that will help you move along with photography too.  If you are new or just thinking about getting into this hobby or maybe even starting a little side business, I will give you tips and tricks to get you moving along. One of the things and challenges I love about photography, is that you can always improve and learn something new. So I plan to keep on learning right along with you.  Here are some of the articles I will begin working on over the next few months.

  • Understanding your digital SLR
  • Shooting in Manual
  • What the heck is ISO and why do I need White balance?
  • Basic back end editing that will make your images pop.
  • Helpful gear as you grow in your passion.
  • How to shoot wide Open.
  • Nurturing you Bokeh addiction.
  • Starting a boutique photography business.

Stay tuned as I work at writing down all that I have learned and what I am working on learning currently.   If you have something you want to learn or have  a question, leave a comment and I will try to flesh it out for you.

Grace and Peace to all learning something new today~

  3. Amber, I stumbled upon your website while searching for pics of skate boards to get ideas for my son’s birthday invitations. I clicked on the pics of your daughter on a skate board and the arrangement and the pics themselves caught my eye. I saw that your blog said “homeschool-diva” and so I began to read…I too am a homeschool mom and am just getting into photography. Your pics are great and inspiring! Just thought I’d leave a comment to say hello!

  4. Well Bobby Welcome!

I’d say that if you liked marathons and triathlons too, we would be twins separated at birth. Send me an email if you ever need help and start shooting in manual the minute you get your rig. I would say choose Nikon but I am biased……:-)

    Thanks for the note,
    a
