Funny things kids say…..

July 15th, 2008

From Jackson - just shy of 7

J- Mama - Do the poeple live on the bottom of the earth see everything upside down?

Me - No son it is all about perspective.  (I am stalling because, for the life of me don’t know how to explain it)

J - Well, why don’t they fall off?

Me - because of gravity.

J - what’s that?

Me - it’s the stuff that holds us on the earth, so we all don’t fly off. A guy named Newton figured it out. ( I know, I know you love my expert description.)

J- silent…

So I am off to the library today to check out something about Newton. Any ideas?

I’m not sure of any books on Newton, but I would point out the physics of this whole deal (it may help make more sense).

Gravity pulls us toward the center of any massive object. Thus, we don’t fly into space because the earth’s gravity is pulling us toward the center of the earth. And therefore people aren’t really upside-down on the other side of the earth because they are also being pulled toward the center.

Perhaps a ball would work, or maybe cutting open an apple for an object lesson so he can see the center and how on either half, the center is still “down”.

    My two cents.

Wow - Luke, thanks so much. Tha tis very easy to understand!

The center being “down” is key!

    Thanks again~
