It’s like Cast Iron!

April 16th, 2008

Yeap that is what the salesman said when he sold us our , then new, microfiber, brown suede sectional coach. That was 4 years ago, and it looks almost brand new, well kind of. OK let’s be serious, we have three little kids running around, nothing is brand new in our home.

Our previous coach we had moved from Gainesville, had been slip covered, reupholstered and finally left out for the trash. I wouldn’t dare give it to goodwill. So when we went searching for a new coach, the one requirement was it must be kid proof. This couch, like many of our possessions, is a pure workhorse. Don’t even get me started with our minivan and dining room table. I must be a horrible mother that I can not contain the mess, nor discipline, train, beg and plead the young members of our clan to stop being so messy. Oh well, it is what it is.

Dark trendy brown, not because that color is a hot color now, but because it hides the many stains

This microfiber can almost be hosed off, which in our case is a very good thing. A scrub brush, a bucket of soapy water and Folex cure all evils on this bad boy! (Trust me cats - BUY THE FOLEX! - it is worth every penny for so many reasons!) The cushions become a sailboat for hearty travelers many times a week much to our chagrin.

We store many, many, many little toys amongst its comfy cushions and underneath its carriage.

I have to vacuum it out often, because, even though we have a NO FOOD ON THE COUCH rule, there seams to be unending food product wedged between its cushions.

So, Lora asked me to join a group of moms who list some of their favorite things each week, and as I replaced the cushions once again, to this couch, I knew this was a definite favorite thing. Families with young kids shouldn’t decorate without it!

    Amber,
Thanks for this post. I am considering microfiber for our next living room furniture to replace our leather “this-should-last-us-forever” (yeah right!) furniture.

Indestructible is the main feature I am looking for. It seems that teenagers are equally hard on furniture and oblivious to the no-food-in-the-living-room rule.

LOL! oh the joys that I have to look forward to! (my first baby is due in 3 weeks).. :) right now we have a really nice, comfy flowery couch that we bought used from a 90 year old lady when we married 2 years ago. I was excited to think that the couch cushion covers (which zippered on and off) could be washed…that is, until I dried them and they SHRUNK! lol..now we have about 4 inches of leftover space between the cushions that i have to constantly try to keep hidden). :)

and i just had to laugh about the food…shoot, we don’t even have kids yet - we just have dogs…and we STILL find food. our chow gabby has the weirdest obsession with hiding food under our couch cushions. i’ve found everything from leftover PB&J sandwhiches to french fries there..all thanks to gabby. :)

Oh Grace - You burst my bubble. So teens are just as hard on your stuff. I am so happy with the microfiber. It is worth its weight in gold.

Lisa, yes your life will change for sure, in wonderful ways. The down side, is you wont have a clean house for the next 20 years, which for me has been a good thing. Letting go of what I want is a pretty good spiritual discipline:-) Think of it this way, you started with dogs, so you won’t be totally behind the 8 ball and I would save my pennies for a new microfiber couch if I were you:-)

Lol, too funny, Amber! I feel much better about myself now. It is so nice to see that a Mommy I admire has some of the same issues I do. I guess we do a common factor here…kids.

Well you saw our red microfiber couch…and this post is a God-send for a number of reasons. I don’t know if you haven’t to notice (I don’t know how you couldn’t!) notice all the stains…the fact is I have a very drooly son; he puts many dogs to shame. And when he watches TV, he’ll sit and suck his thumb while resting his arm on the armrest and by the end of the show, his arm is soaked and there is a huge puddle of saliva on the couch. And I’ve never known what to do about it! I was going to have someone come and professionally clean it, but heck if a bucket, a brush and some folex will do the trick, I’m all in! I don’t take very good care of that darn thing…I don’t vacuum it out, I do spot clean with oxyclean when necessary, but it surely needs an overhaul.

I was frustrated with my microfiber, and wanting to do the leather thing again “next time” but you may have changed my tune! I’ll keep you posted on the results…

Oh girl just you wait until they both are using it as a indoor climbing toy:-) I have to vacuum ours out just so I can sit on it and not be skeeved out all the time.

Really, we have used Folex, warm water and elbow grease about once a quarter since we have gotten it and it holds up just great!
